News from Ghana has confirmed that the former Sierra Leone President Valentine Esegragbo Melvin Strasser’s left leg has been amputated. Strasser’s left leg, which has been tormenting him for many years, was, unfortunately, cut-off last week for medical reasons. Reports say the surgery was done in Ghana as a last resort because Strasser could not be taken to the United States or Europe as advised by doctors for advanced medical treatment where his leg could have survived. In January this year, President Julius Maada Bio gave an executive clearance for the former Head of State Valentine Strasser to be flown to Ghana for medical treatment due to the severity of his illness. President Bio made a visit to his former boss and military colleague at the Aspen Medical Hospital in Freetown on Saturday 5th January 2019, to get an update on Strasser’s ailments. He assured Strasser that the SLPP government will do everything it takes for him to regain his health.

Briefing the President, then the Commanding Officer, Joint Medical Unit, Lt. Col. Dr. Stephen Sevalie said Strasser was suffering from Peripheral Artery Disease affecting the left leg. Dr. Sevalie said that he would require surgery to re-establish blood supply and that should be undertaken by a vascular surgeon. Dr. Sevalie said that Sierra Leone does not have vascular surgeons and as such Strasser will need to be flown out. The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Alpha T. Wurie, who also accompanied President Bio to the Aspen Hospital in January, confirmed the arrangement for Strasser to be flown to Ghana for further medical treatment. Strasser was earlier discharged from the Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Accra. He is now recovering from surgical amputation, and facing serious challenges to his health as he battles back to full recovery. Strasser sustained the injury on his left leg during the civil war against the RUF rebels.
