The Independent Media Commission (IMC) has commended the Independent Radio Network (IRN), Cotton Tree News (CTN) and the UN Radio for the professional manner in which they handled the election coverage nationwide.
The Commission however notes that in spite of the directive from NEC which was relayed to all radio stations by the IMC that all campaigning should cease on Thursday September 6, the APC and SLPP radio stations continued to campaign unabated.
The Commission also noted that throughout this period, the two political radio stations were incessant in their broadcast of inciteful statements, accusations and counter accusations against each other which could have caused chaos and mayhem were it not for the vigilance and robust presence of the security forces.
The Commission is urging the political leaders to get their station managers to refrain from continuing to broadcast inciteful statements including allegations, accusations and counter accusations of elections malpractices as these have the potential of not only eroding the credibility of the results but also create uneasiness by supporters of the two parties.
The Commission wishes to remind the political parties that the relevant institutions to whom complaints of such nature should be made are NEC, the Police and the Special Elections Court.
