Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Bulgarian economist Kristalina Georgieva has emerged as the sole candidate to retain her position as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after the close of the nomination period on Wednesday, April 3, 2024.
Announcing the development, Board Coordinators of the IMF Executive Board, Afonso S. Bevilaqua and Abdullah F. BinZarah, stated, “The period for submitting nominations for the position of the next Managing Director closed on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. One candidate, the current Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, has been nominated.”
The Board is now slated to meet with Georgieva, aiming to conclude the selection process by the end of April 2024, adhering to the process outlined in the decision of March 13, 2024. Their objective is to finalize the selection expeditiously.
This marks the second occasion where Georgieva finds herself as the sole contender. She assumed the position of Managing Director in early October 2019 following the resignation of her predecessor, Christine Lagarde.
Continuing the longstanding tradition of Europeans leading the IMF since its establishment post-World War II, Georgieva garnered overwhelming support from European IMF members.
Georgieva’s tenure as the IMF’s 12th managing director since its inception in 1944 underscores her historic significance as the second woman to helm the Bretton Woods Institution and the first individual from an emerging market economy to do so. Zij/8/4/2024
