Washington DC, USA – Finance Minister Sheku A.F. Bangura has appealed to the World Bank for an extension of two pivotal projects aimed at bolstering connectivity, which he asserts will significantly elevate human and capital productivity.
In a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington DC, Minister Bangura engaged with Ousmane Diagana, Regional Vice President for West and Central Africa, alongside key personnel from the World Bank. The focus of the discussion centered on the imperative need to prolong the SCADEP and IRUMP initiatives, which are heralding transformative changes across urban and rural landscapes in Sierra Leone.
Presenting a comprehensive update to the Bank officials, Minister Bangura underscored the progress made within the SCADEP framework, particularly highlighting advancements in the construction of four crucial rural bridges. With construction milestones ranging from 25% to 48%, the Minister emphasized the tangible impact of these infrastructural developments in fostering regional trade with neighboring Guinea and facilitating access to vital social services in previously isolated rural areas.
Extending his plea to encompass the IRUMP project, Minister Bangura delineated its pivotal role in catalyzing the urban metamorphosis of Freetown. Notable enhancements in urban mobility, road infrastructure, and public amenities underscored the project’s significance, prompting the Minister to advocate for its continuation.
Illustrating the broader scope of development initiatives, Minister Bangura emphasized the importance of extending the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP). Notable achievements in the realm of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), financial sector reforms, and tourism infrastructure underscored the project’s multifaceted impact on economic diversification and private sector development.
Looking ahead, Minister Bangura outlined the government’s strategic approach to mining and emphasized the indispensable role of the World Bank’s technical expertise in this critical sector.
As the discussion concluded, Minister Bangura reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable development and economic growth, underscoring the pivotal role of continued collaboration with international partners like the World Bank.
