At around 10am yesterday a man who appears to be in his late forties, was apprehended by a watchman, at the Ascension cemetery; after he was accused of trying to rape a 12 year-old girl.
The alleged perpetrator and the victim were interrogated by an angry mob comprising of residents of Syke Street and passer-bys.
During the tumultuous interrogation, the girl who disclosed that she resides at Tengbeh-town with her Aunt, said, “Aunty Zain sent me to deliver food for my uncle who is sick.”
She went on “I was going back home from my uncle’s place when I met this man.”
“I never knew him … he called me and said he had something to tell me.”
When I approached him, she went on, “he gave me Le. 2,000 but I refused to take the money.”
With a trembling voice the girl narrated, “I wanted to go but he refused, a woman passing by met us arguing, he asked what was wrong, I told her that this man had called me, saying that he had some thing to tell me, so the woman left us”
After she had gone, the girl said, [the alleged perpetrator] “grabbed me.”
The little girl who appeared terrified stated that she was fighting to free herself, but she was overpowered and her mouth was then tied up with the head tie, she was carrying.
“He threw me to the ground and removed his trousers and then my pant and tried to penetrate me…we were struggling when someone came pointing a flashlight and rescued me,” the now crying girl narrated.
The alleged perpetrator who seemed unperturbed claimed that he is a father of two and denied committing such act.
Asked if he knew the girl, he explained, “She is neither my girlfriend nor my relation I only knew her facially when she normally come to watch sports at the National Stadium.”
He added, “Because I knew her facially I decided to advise her not to walk late at night.”
The alleged perpetrator who refused to give his name stated that he is a public servant working for the Labour Ministry at Dundas Street, and he is residing at Wilkinson Road. After a slight thrashing by the angry crowd, both perpetrator and victim were escorted to the Western Police Station at Adelaide Street for further investigation.
