The Leading mobile telecommunications provider Zain yesterday announced that it has won the prestigious ‘best corporate image’ award at the 2009 Sabre Awards – the most highly accredited prize ceremony on the international public relations calendar.
The award, announced in Stockholm on Thursday 21 May, celebrates the successful rebranding of 14 of Zain’s African operations in August 2008, propelling the mobile operator a step closer in its bid to become a top ten global telecoms operator by 2011.
To unveil the new brand, Zain hosted simultaneous launch events in all 14 markets, connected by live satellite link-up – the first of its kind ever experienced on the continent. The rebranding also coincided with the extension of Zain’s pioneering borderless roaming service One Network across the Middle East and Africa, covering an area larger than the United States of America.
In 2008, Zain’s customer base increased by a remarkable 50%, demonstrating the success of the rebranding and confirming the company’s position as a serious contender on the international playing field.
The Sabre (Superior Achievement in Branding and Reputation) Awards, managed by leading PR publishing operation ‘The Holmes Group’, are the most esteemed awards in the communications business, attracting over 1,200 entries from more than 28 countries throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Zain triumphed to win the sought-after ‘best corporate image’ award, highlighting the company’s commitment to improving the lives of its consumers by solidifying its operations across the Middle East and Africa under a single brand.
CEO of Zain Group, Dr Saad Al Barrak said: “We rebranded our African operations to Zain to bring together our African and Middle East operations under one global identity.
This acknowledgment rewards and recognises the dedicated efforts of our entire 16,000 workforce who made the rebranding such a success.
We will continue to build on our successful track record to ensure the Zain brand goes from strength to strength and that we are even better positioned to offer our customers more innovative products and services.”
Zain also secured award wins for its internal communications during the rebranding, winning Class Winner and two Awards of Excellence at the 2009 Communicators in Business (CiB) Awards in London on Friday 22 May.
The CiB Awards are the leading recognition program to celebrate the best internal communications campaigns, people and agencies from across the globe.
The judge’s comments included: “Zain delivered an extraordinary campaign…by anyone’s standards it was a remarkable achievement” and “this was an extraordinary campaign which faced a completely unique set of challenges and met them all.”
The award marks the latest in a string of successes for the mobile operator, including the recent launch of Zap, the world’s most comprehensive mobile banking service which has achieved over 200,000 subscribers in just over two months of operation.
With over 20,000 transactions per day and an excess of US$2 million dollars transferred to date, Zap has revolutionised banking in East Africa, providing millions of people with access to financial services for the very first time.
