World Vision rescues flood victims in Bonthe

Over one hundred inhabitants of Sengama village in the Bonthe District have received Non-food Items from World Vision Sierra Leone after a recent flooding which destroyed their homes, livestock and crops, leaving many residents in abject poverty and suffering.
Several flood victims, lost their livelihood during the disaster causing excessive suffering for children, youths, adults and the aged, especially women.
Handing over the donation to the flood victims, Mattia Koi Dimoh, the Response Task Force Coordinator of World Vision said the disaster became a concern to the Office of the National Security (ONS) and World Vision Sierra Leone in Bonthe District.
He said a needs assessment team comprising of the District Council and visited the area and observed that over 35 household families were displaced by the flooding which resulted into a health catastrophe, as many children suffered from severe cold and other ailments.
He said the flooding caused serious economic, social and health problems for the people residing beneath the River Jong basin.
He said “some villagers lost everything as several houses collapsed, properties damaged, livestock killed and crops damaged.”
Support Services Director, Tom Nyamawa, of World Vision Sierra Leone, said as a responsible child- focused organization, decided to support the flood victims with non-food items, and there are also plans to build the capacity of the communities on a disaster preparedness plan and the detection of early warning signs. He assured that World Vision is moving towards community resilience in disaster risk reduction.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the flood victims the Town Chief of Sengama village, Bintu S. Koroma expressed profound thanks and appreciation to World Vision for the timely donation to salvage the suffering of the people.
Jonathan Bundu, Communications Manager of World Vision Sierra Leone, said as stakeholders in the development sector, they feel obliged to rescue victims of the flood disaster in the deprived communities, which he said, is the major focus of his organization to protect children in vulnerable communities.
World Vision Sierra Leone is a child-focused organization implementing sustainable development projects in Bo, Bonthe, Pujehun, and Kono through an Area Development Programme that improves the livelihood of the ordinary people in Sierra Leone.
