World Bank supports Youth Empowerment Scheme
In order to ensure that there is development, followed by the sustenance of youth livelihood, the World Bank in collaboration with Help – Sierra Leone, have collectively launched a youth development scheme in Kono, Koidu city, to prepare young people through enterprises and technical skills for formal and informal employment, more especially for urban youth with some secondary education. Speaking on behalf of World Bank, Patrick Ganda said the development of Human resource had been the priority of his organization and that this cannot be achieved, without the involvement of the government. He said the poverty Reduction Strategy paper which is one of the documents that the World Bank is operating with is important because issues relating to the development of Youth, has been clearly set out in that document. Mr. Ganda said the World Bank has provided funding through its implementing partners for the establishment of many developmental schemes across the country and that Kono is not an exception. He therefore called on the young school leavers, to remain focused and concentrate on whatever they may have to go through during the process of learning. He said a trade acquired during the course of training, would help develop the individual and it would stand as a force to fight poverty. The programme Co-ordinator Siafa Jobson-Momoh said the launching of the program in Kono is to help learners translate income generation ideas into reality and apply the concept to local market place. He said Help – Sierra Leone would not only give them training but would ensure that students are protected from exploitation, unsafe labour risky behaviour or recruitment into criminal acts that destabilize the country’s security. He therefore called on authorities to monitor and help sustain the programme. Statements from representatives of the Chiefs, Ministry of Education, both the city and the district councils climaxed the occasion. By Jon-bu
