Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The World Bank has officially appointed Robert Taliercio O’Brien as the Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in the Western and Central Africa Region. O’Brien, an American national, assumes this role starting January 2nd, 2024, and will be stationed at the World Bank’s Accra Office.
In his new capacity, Director O’Brien has delineated three primary priorities: (i) leading strategic dialogues with the mentioned countries and facilitating the implementation of the Africa Region’s priorities, (ii) intensifying policy dialogues and forging partnerships with governments and key stakeholders, and (iii) overseeing the execution and implementation of both lending and non-lending portfolios.
Director Taliercio’s journey with the World Bank began in 2000 as a Young Professional in the Africa region. Over the years, he has held diverse roles, including Practice Manager, Lead Economist, and Country Economist in regions such as East Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, and Africa. His most recent position was as Regional Director in the Latin America and Caribbean Region for the Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions (EFI) Department.
Before joining the World Bank, Taliercio served as a Lecturer in Public Finance at the Harvard Institute for International Development and managed HIID’s Program on Investment Appraisal and Management. Additionally, he was a visiting professor at the Bolivian Catholic University. Taliercio has made significant contributions to academic journals, books, and development publications, particularly in the realms of public finance policy and administration. Notably, he has received service awards from the Ministers of Finance of the Republic of Korea and the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Furthermore, Taliercio holds a PhD and a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University, a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from Stanford University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University. His extensive background and experience position him to play a crucial role in advancing the World Bank’s objectives and fostering development in the region. ZIJ/27/12/2023
