The newly formed organization Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) have expressed great concern over the Physical assault of its member Alimatu Fofanah of the Exclusive News Paper and a final year student at the Fourah Bay College (FBC) by police.
WIMSAL views this action by the police as a contempt to prevent media practitioners from discharging their functions and undemocratic.
This is the second case in two month’s where female media practitioners have been manhandled and brutalized.
WIMSAL is calling on relevant authorities especially the CDIID unit to investigate the matter as there are tapes for investigation.
This incident took place at state house where a group of journalists went to cover a meeting as a follow up to a previous meeting held at the SLPP party office.
The assault of Alimatu came in a recent fracas that happened between SLPP supporters and Police officers at State House on Wednesday.
During the beating, Alimatu’s phone, digital camera and recorder with a huge sum of money were taken from her.
It could be recalled that two of our members were physically assaulted during the cocaine scam at the Lungi International Airport.
WIMSAL is calling on government to take cognizance of the fact that women form an integral part in the country and therefore they must be treated fairly.
