The Regional Director of World Health Organization, Dr. Luis G. Sambo, has urged in a statement that there is need for voluntary donation of blood to save the life of mankind.
This was revealed quite recently in a written statement read by Dr. Wondemagegnehun Alemu, WHO’s Country Director in Sierra Leone on the commemoration of World Blood Donor Day.
The statement further went on to say that this year’s commemoration is geared towards collecting more blood, and to further ensure the availability of blood to a larger number of patients to save their lives.
The report added that countries within the region have made remarkable progress in the collection of blood and improvement of the quality of blood products, further re-echoing that there should be equitable distribution of blood wherever it is needed since blood transfusion structures and technical expertise are concentrated in major cities to the detriment of rural areas where the majority of the population live.
However, in the statement of Dr. Alemu, it was stressed that voluntary blood donation will ensure substantial reduction of deaths among children, women and men at risk of death from haemorrhage or sever anaemia.
He said that access to blood and blood products coupled with generous donations by men and women eager to save endangered lives, require that there is need to redouble efforts to provide better response to the aspirations of the population.
He urged officials in the health service sectors to put special emphasis on raising awareness among the populace, and mobilizing them to donate blood voluntarily in other to strengthen the human and technical capacities of services in charge of the recruitment and retention of blood donors.
The WHO Country Director further urged health providers to establish blood transfusion facilities capable of covering the entire national territory, and provide them with adequate logistics to enable them contact patient services in order to ensure fast distribution of blood and blood products to all health facilities.
