Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The eagerly anticipated Western Area Handball Championship, which faced an interruption due to an unfortunate incident on November 26th, is set to resume today, Monday, December 11th, 2023, at the Old Skul complex. The competition will kick off with two matches: Juba Rocks will face NFF in the first match, while the second match in the male category will witness Sengbe Pieh battling against RSLAF.
Abu Bakarr Sesay, the Technical Director of the Sierra Leone Handball Association, shared insights into the competition’s initial matches. He mentioned that on November 24th, in the female category, Madam Yoko secured victory over Hand SL with a score of 21-07. The subsequent day, on November 25th, RSLAF defeated Juba Rock with a score of 10-04. On the same day, Hand SL, having lost their first match, made a strong comeback to defeat NFF by a scoreline of 20-06.
Sesay further elaborated on the championship, stating that five male teams are participating, including RSLAF, Juba Rocks, Hand-SL, Sengbe Pieh, and National Fire Force. Notably, apart from RSLAF, four of the male teams have female counterparts participating in the competition.
He highlighted the importance of the annual Western Area championship in player selection for national representation in international events. Sesay emphasized that after regional and national championships, players will be selected based on merit to represent the country in international competitions. This rigorous selection process ensures the country fields the most skilled and deserving players for both male and female teams. BT/11/12/2023
