Zainab Kamara a pupil of the Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG) and also playing for Rodney Stars in the ongoing Africell sponsored beach Volleyball competition being held opposite Roy Restaurant Lumley Beach in Freetown has disclosed to Awoko Sports that they are going to win the competition.
“We have prepared a lot for this particular competition and nothing can stop us from winning it “Zainab said.
She also disclosed that she will be playing alongside Diana Moses in the team which is a big blessing to them. She said Diana has been in the game for a very long time now and they are confident that they will win the competition at all cost
She mentioned that those playing in the competition are not strangers to them and they had participated in several other competitions. “We are not afraid of any of the teams in the competition” she declared.
Rodney Stars are presently leading the league table after winning their three matches over the weekend. On Saturday they defeated Star Girls in three set to two (3-2) and on Sunday they also defeated Muctarr United.
A float parade comprising all the teams participating in the competition assembled at Family Kingdom and moved through the major Streets to the venue. The Chief Commercial Manager of Africell, Mr. Joe Amara Bangali Jnr said before the competition started “today is a wonderful day for sports in Sierra Leone; for the youths all over the country ,for Africell, for the Sierra Leone Volleyball Association and the Ministry of Youth and Sports “.
He further stated that the Africell National Beach Volleyball tournament will not sharpen the talents of the participants but will provide much needed entertainment to the general public every Saturday and Sunday for a period of one month.
Joe Amara-Bangali Jnr also revealed that the tournament will show case our famous beach coastline which is among the best in the world. This is important in that it highlights the re-branding exercise that is presently being undertaken in Sierra Leone with the aim of portraying a good image of the country.
And since the tournament is being played in one of the best beaches in the country ,it will promote the country in the area of tourism with the end result of increasing the flow of tourists thereby creating a situation that will be extremely beneficial to mobile phones like Africell, many other industries and the government
“The organization of this tournament provided an opportunity for us to sign a five year agreement with the Sierra Leone Volleyball Association which granted Africell the exclusive option of sponsoring all Volley Ball tournaments and events in Sierra Leone granted we believe that this agreement will develop skills of our youth in this sport, promote the sport nationally and lead to the setting up of a national team competing in regional continental and global tournaments, Mr. Bangali said.”
He also mentioned that sports plays an important part in bringing people together and since Africell’s mission is to bring people closer we are happy that the this tournament will mark a new phase in our collaboration with the ministry of youth and sports for the development and promotion of various sporting activities in Sierra Leone.
The Director of Youth Anthony Koroma who deputized the deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Algassium Jah declared the tournament open. The competition continues this weekend.
