The Guma Valley Water Company Public Relations Office Joseph Musa has in a short interview told Awoko that they will start resumption of water supply across the city after a few weeks of break due to an accident.
He said the repairs have been completed by changing the full length of pipe after they failed to repair it through wielding on three occasions. “The full length has been changed due to the good weather we had the past two days and we have concreted it properly to avert any damage in the future. It was a difficult job that moved the Minister, the General Manager, engineers and a lot of labourers to work day and night.”
In another development, Guma Valley Water Company General Manager, Ibrahim Wilson has said that more storage facilities are needed around the city to combat the water shortage in the capital.
Speaking to journalists last Monday at the Angola Town during the repairs of the damaged pipe, he said the capital has enough rainfall that should serve the people throughout the year if there were enough storage facilities.
Mr Wilson said the quantum of rainfall that falls during the rainy season is more than enough for the country, but when the dams and existing reservoirs are full, the water that is wasted is unprecedented.
“If we have more storage facilities around the city, we would be able to serve the people throughout the year with no problems at all.”At present, the two dams in the capital are now overflowing along with the reservoirs, but millions of gallons of water are now running into streams that should have been stored if there were more storage facilities across the city.Many reservoirs in and around the city have been damaged by people or have been discarded by Guma over the years, which should have been repaired and made functionable.
Few years ago, two reservoirs at Regent were abandoned by Guma and apparently sold. Today the individual that was apportioned that area for over five years have been breaking them down but has still not succeeded.
There are many of such reservoirs that have either been destroyed or left to perish by Guma that today would have been serving the public to avert shortage.
Also, the general manager said very soon the Guma name will change to carry the Freetown name as Guma Valley is responsible to supply water from Allen Town to York. During the Sixties, the name was Freetown Water Works (FWW).
The Guma Valley Water Company has promised to improve water supply in the future and they too are appealing to the populace to pay their water rates to help the company meet their obligation.
