England-based league two side, Walsall has extended good wishes to the team’s partner, Walsall Sierra Leone-a non-division team that are keen to qualify for the Western Area Football Association (WAFA) second division league.
The England based club who recently teamed-up with the Sierra Leonean Walsall FC Sierra Leone on Thursday October 25, sent a message to the Sierra Leonean club wishing them all the best.
The massage reads: “Everyone at Walsall wishes Walsall FC Sierra Leone all the best for this season and we shall monitor their progress every step of the way.”
Walsall Sierra Leone which was formerly known as ‘We The Best FC’ of the Smart Farm Community, decided to change their name to Walsall FC Sierra Leone after local hero, Ibrahim Balla Kamara came into contact with Trust Secretary, Steve Davies online. Due to Kamara’s interest in English Football and Walsall FC in particular, as he has been following the club’s progress for some time, there was quick and easy establishment between the two.
Already the English club has started helping the Freetown based club and quite recently the non-league side received sets of jerseys from their English counterpart and has also created a website for the club, where information will be gathered about the club. According to Kamara who is delighted for such partnership, are determined to spread the club’s name and contribute in their own way towards the development of Sierra Leone football.
He said: “This is a great opportunity for our players and also the country’s football and we are ready to spread the word of Saddlers in Sierra Leone and help promote football in the country.”
The club was formed in July 2011 and first started as a 5-a-side team playing local- based community league cup competitions and street football.
Later, the team moved into the Young Sportsmen’s Club playing field in mid-November 2011 and lost their first game 3-2 to a young Boston FC, with Ibrahim Balla Kamara scoring the first ever goal for WFC SL in that match.
The SL Saddlers as they are called, enjoyed a promising start in its first ever major league cup competition in which the team reached the semi-final stage of the Wilberforce Community Development League Cup Competition in December 2011 and suffered a defeat from five games and were beaten by Walsall legend John Keister’s FC Johansen.
After a review of the teams, outstanding performances in January 2012, the team immediately named Solomon M. Mansaray as the first ever coach of WFC SL.
