Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Volleyball Association, Ahmed Khanou is on behalf of the association dishing out cheques and volley ball materials to the four regional volley ball teams in the country ahead of a planned inter-regional volley ball competition slated for 15-17 March, 2012 at the Bo Coronation field.
Three of the regional teams; West, East and North, will each receive a cheque amount of Le 2,000,000 (two million Leones) and some volleyball materials, while the host regional team in the South will receive a cheque of Le 4, 000, 000 (four million Leones) and some volley ball materials while they prepare to host the competition. The packages include; volleyballs, beach volleyballs, nets and a standard ropes for beach volleyball courts.
Information sourced by Awoko Sports is that the Southern region and the Eastern Region were the first to receive their boost packages through their various City Mayors.
Last Tuesday, February 14th 2012, the Western Area team received its own package from the Acting Mayor of Freetown City Council, Gibril Kanu at his council office.
According to the Secretary General, the amounts and materials are aimed at boosting the teams ahead of the volley competition. He said the association is working in consonant with the City Councils of the various regions to ensure that the competition turns out to be successful. “This time around we want to see worthy representations from the regions and we expect this year’s tourney to be a first-of-its-kind in the history of volleyball in the country,” Khanou said. He informed that they would be introducing Beach Volley Ball in this year’s tourney.
While receiving the cheque and materials from the Volleyball Secretary General, the Acting Mayor described the gesture as “laudable” and pledged support on behalf of the Council to the western area team. He encouraged the Western Area team as Champions, “to defend and retain the championship.”
President of the Western Area Volleyball Association (WAVA), Moses Koroma on receiving the cheque and materials from the Acting Mayor, allayed the fear of the Mayor, noting that he has confidence in his teams.
“I have confident in both my male and female teams and I have no doubt they will retain the title,” Koroma assured. He however noted that they will not be going into the competition with complacency as they are aware of a “hectic competition ahead of them.”
The Northern Region Team will receive theirs through the City Mayor of Makeni today, Thursday February 16th 2012.
