As the official period for the local elections draw to a close, the ruling APC Party in an effort to maintain its stance and win the confidence of the people, has started its campaigning in the Eastern Region of the country.
On a brief stop at Koidu, Kono District Vice President Samuel Sam Sumana on behalf of his party the All Peoples Congress (APC) and Government ushered in words of praise to the chiefs for accepting them back. Vice President Sumana said involving the chiefs in the running of the state, means success for the Government.
He said the Chiefs are loyal and that they are always ready to stand in support of any Government of the day. He therefore urged them to rally round their subjects so as to cast their ballot for the APC come July Local Elections. He said the Chiefs have strong influence over their subjects and that they are always ready to listen to them. Chief Sam Sumana said the APC have good intentions for the people of Kono but only that it has to take time for it to be practicalized.
The Vice President also touched on the issue of the youth. He said recent media publications had bitterly complained about the unruly behaviour of the youth in Kono. He said his Government would not take it lightly with anyone, who intends to destroy the good image of the Government. He said he would talk to the Chiefs to provide land so that youths interested in mining could get themselves busy. Chief Sumana also encouraged the residents of Kono to adopt the system of Agriculture, if they are to fight poverty and hardship in the country “My Government is ready to give its support to a group or groups of people who are ready to farm”.
Speaking on behalf of the council of Paramount Chiefs the chairman for the council Sairus Konobudor said the council would go round in all the chiefdoms to propagate the good message of the Party. He said the council would make the Vice President happier as far as the Local Elections are concerned. Mr. Jengo Stevens member of the Vice President’s entourage who also spoke during the meeting recalled the good relationship that had once existed between the Party and the people of Kono. He however came down hard on the former SLPP Government more especially Ex-President Kabbah whose leadership he said was a mere failure to the country. He said the Ex-President made a lot of promises which he couldn’t fulfill.
During the course of his tour, the Vice President had time to visit various institutions within the Township.
At the Koidu Government Hospital Vice President Sumana presented medical equipment to the hospital which was officially donated by Doctor Komba Kono, a son the soil. He said it is good for Sierra Leoneans to imitate people like Doctor Komba Kono whose goodwill gesture was not a small measure to the development of Kono.
Chief Sumana also met the Drivers’ Union Team at Konomanyi Park before he finally drove off to the party office, where he briefly spoke to party stalwarts and supporters, followed by a gift of one desktop computer and a power generator to the office.
