United States Embassy Donates Books to SLAJ North
The public relations wing of the United States of America’s Embassy in Sierra Leone have donated 20 text ‘Unfettered Press’ books to the regional secretariat of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) North at their 8 Mansaray Streets office in Makeni, on Friday 26th October 2012. This is the second time that the American Embassy is donating books that are very relevant to the media in that part of the country. Two years ago a huge donation was made from the Embassy to the Makeni Secretariat for the general use of all journalists in the North. Handing over the books, Program Officer in the United States Embassy, Marilyn Kamara, described the relationship they have with the Association as “very cordial and effective” especially under the “Umaru Fofana Regime.” Madam Bangura pledged the Embassy’s readiness and willingness to support the media in the country, which according to her they have been doing. Madam Marilyn Kamara said the books they are presenting may be small in number but urged them to make effective use of them in carrying out their everyday work. She pledged the Embassy’s continual support to the association and urged them to write the Embassy for training needs with the journalists in the country. The Public Affairs Officer in the American Embassy Boa Lee said their presence in Makeni and the Secretariat is because the Embassy is presently training 18 Secondary School teachers in the north on their roles and responsibilities. She said the books though small in number, will help journalists to do effective work in a simple manner. Madam Boa Lee said the American Embassy is making available the media books as part of their support to the media in Sierra Leone in helping them carry out their work. She said the books are rich with media content, which according to her will increase on the do’s and don’ts in journalism. Receiving the books the regional chairman of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Stanley Bangura Jr. thanked the American Embassy for their kind gesture noting that during his tenure as regional chairman they have received donations from the embassy on two occasions. Mr. Bangura assured the embassy of ensuring that the books are used at district level for members to be well aware of the interventions of the American Embassy. Mr. Stanley Bangura Jr. assured the Embassy representatives of the regional and national continual partnership with the embassy in ensuring that their activities are popularised not only in the capital but also, at regional levels. The donation was witnessed by station managers across the north and other journalists in Makeni. By Mohamed Kabba
