The St George Foundation with support from the United Nations Development Programme has organized a one day joint evaluation workshop on Access to Justice for stakeholders in Songo, York, Tombo and Waterloo in the Western Rural District at the Council Conference Hall over the weekend.
The objective of the workshop is to discuss the final phase of the evaluation process on access to justice for gender based violence and rape for the understanding and participation of stakeholders in raising awareness at community level.
Speaking to stakeholders at the evaluation workshop the Administrative officer for St. George Foundation John Dalton Conteh expressed the need for stakeholder’s involvement to raise community awareness on gender based violence in society.
He further explained about the role of communities in ensuring gender based violence and rape cases are reported and access to justice provided for the victims and perpetrators punished as a means to change people’s attitude towards women.
Dalton also expressed the need to have a guide and implementation frame work to improve protection and participation of stakeholders in the design and evaluation of access to justice to address impunity.
He said, St George Foundation is providing transportation, medical and temporary shelter for gender base violence and rape victims while perpetrators face justice, adding that the organization has embarked on series of sensitization programs in the western area on access to justice.
The UNDP representative at the evaluation workshop said gender based violence and rape are human right issues that need to be addressed by stakeholders in society, and called for women empowerment to participate in governance.
The chairman of the workshop Waterloo Head man Osey Whenzle said women are facing various forms of injustices and expressed the need to support access to justice for victims of gender based violence particularly rape by creating community awareness for actions.
Participants of the workshop expressed thanks and appreciation to UNDP and St George Foundation for the sensitization and evaluation programme of Access to Justice and promised to disseminate the message to their respective communities. Presentation of skits on gender based violence and access to justice by participants climaxed the workshop.
