UNDP schools police and CSO’s in Kenema
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has ended a three days refresher training for staff at the Sierra Leone Police Family Support Unit (FSU), Social Workers and Civil Society Organizations from the East and Southern regions of the country at the Kenema District Council hall along Nyandeyama road in Kenema city. UNDP monitoring officer Walter Niba says they are organizing the training to reduce the case management guide lines aimed at ensuring Sexual and Gender Base Violence (SGBV) victims are treated accordingly in their respective communities. Niba told invitees at the District Council hall in Kenema that they have included civil society organizations in the project for them to complement the effort of Family Support Unit (FSU) Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) investigators and social workers in the fight against compromise. Going through the training, FSU staff, social workers and CSO members are capacitated enough to handle matters relating to sexual and gender based violence in their various settlements. Walter Niba encouraged participants to treat the exercise with the seriousness it deserved at all times before appealing for the replication of knowledge acquired during the training to those whom he says are not fortunate to attend the training. Earlier in his statement a civil society activist in the eastern region Titus Mansalay described CSOs as the link between the government and its people thus making it mandatory for them to sensitize the citizens on their rights and responsibilities to the state at all times. He appealed to UNDP for the continuation of their services to the people of Sierra Leone especially women who he regarded as victims of SGBV so that their right to justice can be guaranteed at all times.
