The United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) yesterday donated items to the National Aids Secretariat (NAS) for the furtherance of the comprehensive condom programme. The programme is being funded by UNFPA.
Among the items donated were 11 sets of generators, DVD sets, fans, boosters and electric cables. Handing over the items to the NAS Director Dr Brima Kargbo the HIV Officer of UNFPA Miss Nyaibor Ngombu said that her organization is very pleased with the work that NAS is doing and they have been very instrumental to the National HIV/AIDS response programme. She further stated that the items will be used to further promote the prevention of mother to child transmission programme.
After receiving the items on behalf of the National Aids Secretariat Dr. Brima Kargbo she handed them to Alhaji Dr. Momodu Sesay the Programme Manager for the National Aids Control Programme.
Dr. Sesay thanked UNFPA for their kind gesture to strengthen the health system and promised to use the items for its intended purpose. He also said that the mother to child transmission is very high in the country, and his office has done their bid to reduce it.
He also stated that the items will be distributed to different peripheral Health Units based on criteria motive, but they will take into consideration those areas that have not yet benefited from such a donation. He expressed hope that they will see more of these donations in order to eliminate mother to child transmission in 2015.
Dr. Kargbo said that the New Year has started well considering what UNFPA have done for them. He also said that UNFPA is very supportive in helping them in their work, noting that if there is an increase in the number of people using condoms, the mother to child transmission will reduce.
