The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched the Kenema Recovery Programme in that eastern city.
The acting minister of Development and Economic Planning, Ibrahim Sesay, said the recovery programme was set up to foster local economic initiatives for economic development in Kenema, and to develop the capacity of the town councils to provide services and infrastructure.
The minister of Local Government and Community Development, Sidique Brima, stated that the high level of poverty and the dominance of the agricultural sector in Sierra Leone suggested a socio-economic entry point to sustain the population of the country. He however noted that linking the urban and rural communities and introducing a local development fund would be a key means of success.
The Kenema City Council chairman, Patrick Samu, chaired the ceremony while the city mayor Evans Brima Gbema gave the vote of thanks.
