The Executive Representative of the United Nations Secretary General (ERSG) and head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) Victor Angelo and other senior officials of the UN yesterday paid a first courtesy call on the President Ernest Koroma and Vice President Sam Sumana at State House.
In welcoming the ERSG and his team, Vice President Sumana thanked Angelo for the role he and his organization played in the successful and just concluded Parliamentary and Presidential elections.
The Vice President called on the UN to assist the government and people of the country in achieving its topmost priority of reducing poverty through the provision of the basic social services (electricity, water, health and sanitation).
He added that the UN brought peace to the country; and they must therefore ensure that the peace is sustained through the restructuring of the country.
“the security of the state and capacity building after the eleven years of war which has enlisted the economy at the bottom of the UN Human Development Index” he stated .
The Vice President acknowledged the UN efforts in the restructuring of the security sector, developing the infrastructure, education, health and youth employment.
Vice President Sam Sumana requested the UN Special Representative to help government in the energy sector which is in a crisis and which is now government’s immediate priority in its development agenda. In response the ERSG catalogued the UN continued support and commitment towards the government’s development agenda especially on poverty reduction, good governance and peace consolidation. Angelo told the Vice President that the UN family in the country looks forward to the Vice President’s leadership and respect for national ownership.
The head of UNIOSIL noted that this was a great opportunity for a sustained partnership between the UN and the government for national security and development.
