Two Sierra Leonean cricket umpires, Joseph Katta and Elizabeth French, will participate in a five-day umpires’ elite course in South Africa, which is expected to starts on Saturday November 24th 2012.
The course is a refresher course to build the capacity of various umpires in Africa and according to information, Elizabeth French is the only female ICC umpire in Sierra Leone and the second in Africa.
The course will be her second course in umpiring.
She has officiated in only one ICC tournament hosted in Ghana a few years ago. She told Awoko sports that she will use this opportunity to upgrade her standard and at the same time to appeal to the ICC /ACA officials to give more opportunities to women to officiate, especially in female tournaments.
On the side of Katta, who is the tournament Director for the Sierra Leone cricket Association, his own appeal will be ICC to organize regional tournaments for the north /West African region before going for the continent’s tournaments.
The course will involve both theory and practical . In the practical, the participating umpires will officiate club matches in South Africa .
The course will end on 28th November 2012 and they are expected home the following day.
