Freetown SIERRA LEONE – Amadu Koita Makalo, the first accused in an ongoing treason trial involving twelve individuals before Justice Komba Kamanda at High Court No1 in Freetown, has raised concerns about threats to his life during his four-month detention at the Correctional Centre.
Koita’s disclosure about his alleged ordeal was met with objection from Robin Mason Senior, the state prosecutor, who argued that issues regarding the welfare of accused persons at the Correctional Centre should be addressed through their legal representatives, as per previous rulings by the judge.
In response, Sigismund A. Conteh, Koita’s lawyer, emphasized that his client’s firsthand experience could provide crucial insights into his condition. He relayed Koita’s complaint that he had not received food since Friday, expressing concern about his client’s ability to continue with the trial under such circumstances.
Justice Kamanda acknowledged the gravity of Koita’s allegations, emphasizing the seriousness of the treason trial. He directed Conteh to submit an affidavit detailing Koita’s complaints, providing an opportunity for all parties to address the issue.
The judge firmly asserted the court’s authority, stating that no individual should dictate the proceedings of the trial. “No one should dictate to the court how the trial should be done,” Justice Kamanda reiterated.
The trial was adjourned to Wednesday, March 27, 2024, to allow for further proceedings and considerations regarding Koita’s allegations. SEG/26/3/2024
