Hundreds of supporters of the SLPP took to the streets in jubilation with their councilors waved palm fronds in the air after the announcement of the final Local Government results.
Former NPRC strongman Tom Nyuma was particularly jubilant after he won the Chairman ship of the Kailahun District with a massive margin of 38,119 votes as he secured 52,371 votes as against his APC opponent Solomon Musa who scored 14,252 votes. Before announcing the results, Commissioner Sylvanus Torto praised all for going through an election he described as successful. He praised the police for their role in maintaining peace during the electioneering process. The final number of polling stations for which results were tallied was 5,883, and the final number of votes inputted into the system was 1,056,440 (994,524 valid votes and 61,916 invalid votes). The final average national turnout was 38.8%. “During the course of the tally, the NEC was also once again placed in the unfortunate position of having to invalidate the results of 1(one) polling centre in this region due to flagrant irregularities (03182, Evangelical Mission Primary School, Kanewa Village, Kono District). This could only happen with the connivance of the polling staff working in that station” he said. Commissioner Torto maintained that “The NEC wishes to reaffirm, once again, its determination to ensure that electoral fraud is part of the political past of Sierra Leone. We will therefore ensure that the perpetrators of electoral malpractices such as ballot stuffing are handed over to the relevant authorities. We want to assure the public that this invalidation did not change the overall result in question.” By Saffa Moriba in Kenema
