One of Sierra Leone’s foremost dramatist, playwright, teacher, critique, columnist and adventurer Tom P. Cauuray was yesterday immortalized at a symposium at the Atlantic Hall of the National Stadium where some of his great works were read.
In his key note tribute, Raymond De Souza George stated that the demise of such an admirable figure who has contributed immensely to education and the development of the theater industry was a big loss. He maintained that because of the handiwork of the ‘great Tom Cauuray’, his departure will still linger in their memories as he described him as humble, simple and wise.
Mr. George stated that Tom was indeed a celebrated poet as his work was admired by many within Sierra Leone and beyond. In his life, he said, he was able to publish many works of art and further contributed in diverse ways to the development of many dramatist and playwrights in present day Sierra Leone.
He sadly lamented that the death of Tom Cauuray, devastating to the mind as it is, will prevent his loved ones, friend, brothers and relative from eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, adding that the news of his death “will ever remain indelible in our heart”.
Mr. George added that though Tom Cauuray was dead they were gathered to celebrate the existence of departed merits further stating that “he who has the merit is gone but his merits will still exist”.
He admonished all that they should not forget about the inevitability of death as it is the master of man which no soul can escape.
The Charge d‘Affaires of the US Embassy Glenn Fedzer expressed his sincere condolence over the death of Tom Cauuray and referred to his death as “a big loss for the art world of Sierra Leone”.
He further stated that Mr. Cauuray was very resourceful to their mission and remembered with fond memories his electrifying contributions to symposia and panel on the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. in January each year.
He said the demonstration of the expertise of Mr. Cauuray will hardly be blotted out of their memories. At the Atlantic Hall, works of the late Tom Cauuray was read by selected celebrated dramatists who were all assembled to remember the good works of one of the great gems of Sierra Leone.
Many of his work of arts including “Epitaph, Farewell to Salone, I have a Friend Call Laaa-i-la who is your friend” etc were enjoyed by all present.
