Save the Future Generation (Safuge) Sierra Leone a nongovernmental Humanitarian and noncommercial organization formed by some pupils in Sierra Leone will today organize a quiz competition for pupils in senior secondary school with the aim of encouraging them in mathematics. The purpose of this quiz an annual events, is to help ignite a fiery passion in the high school students of Sierra Leone for Mathematics. We believe that one of the keys to our development lies in the development of our Science and Technology and that requires an excellent Mathematics environment.
According to a member of the organization Prince Moses they hope that the competition will encourage some of the brilliant minds in Sierra Leone to pursue this rich field with passion and thirst for more knowledge and understanding in Mathematics which will put Sierra Leone again onto the high pedestal from which it had fallen and once again become the “Athens of West Africa” it was.
“By achieving this strong mathematical environment through the competition, we hope to make Sierra Leone a beacon to the rest of West Africa and the continent as a whole, as the continent is also lagging behind” he stated.
“It would be a surprising fact to most people to know that the very basics of mathematics started in Sub-Saharan Africa and that the famous and well publicized Egyptian mathematical tradition got its base from the knowledge the people of Sub Saharan Africa had already known, facts like the circumference of the earth, the mean length of the earth’s orbit, the speed of light and trigonometric calculations among a host of other branches of knowledge” the organization stated in a release.
This year’s quiz competition will be among seven senior secondary schools including APEX, Annie Walsh Memorial and Prince of Wales. International and mathematical concepts ranging from Algebras and Calculus will be dealt with. As part also of their project, the organization recently, donated 60 chairs and tables to the Freetown Cheshire Home.During the donation ceremony, Ishiaka Mansaray said that the thought of donation to this home has long been in their minds and that wherever they do jobs for the organization a mention of Cheshire Home was made.
Safuge is an organization formed in Sierra Leone by secondary school students from the Sierra Leone Grammar School, with an amalgamation of other amateur high school students. The project started in Norway at RCNUWC (Red Cross Nordic United World College, Norway) with graduate Joseph from Sierra Leone as a continuation of a project he had started in high school with some friends. The main aim as the name suggests is to save the future generation of Sierra Leone from what looks like a bleak future.
