Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) has climaxed the world environmental week celebration with a tree planting activity, which is a key priority under the Bank’s sustainable environment agenda at the Lumley Beach last Saturday.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of SCB Albert Saltson stated that the Bank took a long term view of the consequences of its actions and are committed to building a sustainable business that continues to be high performing, while “viewing all their actions in terms of their environmental impact and economic and social contribution to Sierra Leone.”
Standard Chartered Bank, he opined, “has therefore integrated their ambitions into the policies and practices of work, and factor risks as climate change impacts on biodiversity, deforestation, air and water pollution into all lending decisions.” He further reiterated that the Bank is committed to reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and that their main impact on the environment is shown in paper consumption, energy use on their premises, coupled with energy use when staff travel, water consumption and efforts of projects financed by the bank on environment.
The theme of this years world environmental day was “CO2; Kick the Habit and as trees utilize carbon dioxide and emit oxygen,” the bank planted 100 coconut trees across Lumley Beach, which is a major touristic attraction.
