Reports filtering in from the diamond rich town of Tongo Field about 26 miles from the district headquarter town of Kenema city states that scores of miners have perished in a mining pit. According to reports some people sneak into the mining place called ‘sand sand’ very close to Bomie Town just after the hospital at night.
On Saturday morning August 1st 2009 news spread in the town that some miners were buried by sand at night.
Police went to the scene and rescued three people one of them in a critical condition. l.
It is not clear how many people might have been buried in the pit as scores of miners invade the area at night.. At the time of going to press the rescue team was still in operation.
This is not the first time for miners to be buried in mining pits in Tongo field. In 2000 over 40 people were buried in a mining pit which caved in at night. The most common practice in Tongo field is for over 20 people to converge in a mining area commonly known as ‘’JAGAJA’’ meaning seven thousand Leones per day and they do not have any ownership to the proceeds.
