The stage is once again set for the commencement of the Tangains Festival. It is one of the famous cultural and traditional funfair festivals in the country. The Tangains festival is organized by three groups, the Freetong Players international (FPI), The Best Squad (TBS) and the Siaka Steven Stadium Management. This year, the festival will commence from the 1st December 2019 to 1st January 2020. The Director of Freetong Players International, Master Tuti Haffner speaking to media practitioners at the Atlantic Hall Stadium Hostels on Friday 1st November, 2019 said that they are delighted to inform the public on the state of preparedness for the hosting of this year’s festival. He said that the grand opening of the festival will be on the 10th December 2019 by the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Memunatu Pratt. He said it is to give opportunity to those erecting their stalls to finish on time. There will be the Salone Fashion Night on the 12th December, Cultural display on the 19th December, Laf ta yu Alaki on the 21st December and Miss Tangains award 1st January 2020. Also, there will be Football gala, innovation, music performance and dance competitions, including children’s show and traditional games. Haffner said “this festival is to show case our rich cultural heritage and unique traditions. It will attract people from the Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria with Sierra Leoneans from the diaspora. Also Jamaicans have heard of the festival and recognize it. This time we expect big things to happen at the festival” he said. Francis Kamara, representing the stadium management assured the public of their readiness to host the Tangains festival. “We have improved the lighting system in and around the stadium to deter miscreants during the festival”. For his part, the representative of TBS, Kandeh Omega Koroma said the Tangains festival is promoting our culture and traditional activities nationally and internationally. “We collaborate with Freetong Players and the stadium management to host this household festival.

“The booths for the trade fair will cost Le 1, 350, 000. The ticket price will be Le 5, 000, a flat rate for both adults and children for a whole day. We have negotiated with other show promoters so that during the festival, if there is a show it will not affect our pricing” said Haffner in responding to questions. He also said that they have taken security measures by hiring three private security companies to add to the police presence and sometimes military personnel. He also promised that the festival will have clean toilet facilities. “The first prize for the Miss Tangains award will be Le 10 million” he added The Tangains organizers said that the proceeds they generate from the festival is usually plowed back into society by providing scholarships to needy students, incentive for small scale entrepreneurship, provision of educational materials to the less privileged and award prizes to winners of their competitions. The Tangains Festival was founded in 1994 by Charlie Haffner. This year it will have a floating carnival from the Up Gun Turntable to the Siaka Steven Stadium on the 1st December 2019 punctuated by traditional songs, dance and Boo Boo parade. The motto for this year’s Tangains festival is “Know where you come from”.
