The roads in the city of Bo which is the second capital of Sierra Leone is becoming terrible and creating discomfort for both motorists and pedestrians. Apart from the Bo to Taiama road and Kenema to Bo that have been tarred, the other networks in to the city are terrible, – namely the Bo to Yele and Mattru roads.
The city of Bo like the capital Freetown were the only two cities that used to enjoy tarred roads but that is not now the case as streets like Dambala road which starts from CKC School unto the clock tower, Kissy town road which starts from Aries night club unto NP fuel station, Mission road, Prince Williams street, Bojon street, Njaboima road and Fenton road were well tarred roads but today they are all riddled with potholes.
The last time Awoko visited Bo city, youths were visibly seen undertaking road patching work on Njagboima road where the Provincial secretary’s office is located and the Bo, Kenema Power Station.
Residents of Bo interviewed said, they have paid their taxes to the Bo Town Council but they are yet to benefit from the Council adding “even the road network within the city has not been improved upon by both SLRA and the Council”
Last week Awoko rode past the streets observing the faded clock tower, un painted houses and round abouts, the city center generally seemed old and chaotic as piles of garbage litter major streets in Bo particularly the former Maxwell Khobe Park.
Offensive stench hangs over the air through the principal streets of Bo to the discomfort of residents and visitors to the city and sadly Council do not seem to care about repairs.
The only new road in the city is the Shell Mingo via Sewa Road to Mahei Boima Road, but these are slowly being eaten up by potholes and soil erosion due to lack of proper drainage system in the city.
Trunk roads like New Gerehun Road, Mattru Road and the Towama Road have not been repaired for years now and it is seemingly evident that motorist are shunning the road to the disappointment of passengers.
Commercial vehicles are no more plying the Township of Bo as a result passengers are forced to use motor bikes to move from place to place within Bo even the bus service is not operational for students.
The Bo Yele Road is even worse as drivers complain of frequent break downs on the road. As a result passenger fears have been increased beyond the reach of the ordinary people. When our reporter visited Dambala few miles from Bo it was observed that SLRA and the Council had not done much to rehabilitate the roads. Our reporter contacted the Bo City Mayor Wusu Sannoh, he said SLRA has not completely devolved their functions to the council, and that they do not have much fund to rehabilitate all the damaged roads within Bo. He however promised to raise funds for the immediate repair of all pot holes and trunk roads will also be rehabilitated.
