Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Bala Amara Sekaran, the Program Director for Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, emphasized the positive impact of sporting events in bringing young people together. Speaking during the launch of the Salone Cup Cycling Series race in Freetown on Friday, November 24, 2023, where Tacugama was a main sponsor, Sekaran highlighted the importance of utilizing sports platforms to discuss environmental conservation and promote the national Chimpanzee brand.
He expressed the belief that sporting events provide a valuable opportunity to engage the public in conversations about the environment, conservation, and the significance of Sierra Leone’s national animal, the Chimpanzee. Tacugama’s involvement in sponsoring events like cycling races, and volleyball teams, and collaboration with Olympic organizations aims to create awareness and broaden the understanding of the role Chimpanzees play in development, tourism, education, and sports.
Sekaran stressed the importance of protecting the country’s wildlife and heritage for future generations. Tacugama, as a credible organization, leverages its brand to collaborate with partners, such as mobile network Qcell, to support events that align with conservation goals. The goal is not only to sponsor events in Freetown but to expand to the provinces, reaching a wider audience.
He noted that National Chimpanzee Week, coinciding with various activities contributes to raising awareness. Sekaran expressed commitment to supporting future events and bringing in larger brands to amplify the message of conservation through sports.
Highlighting the declaration of the Chimpanzee as Sierra Leone’s national animal four years ago, Sekaran underscored the organization’s mission to utilize the Chimpanzee brand to contribute to societal development and tell a compelling story through various initiatives, including sports sponsorships.
