Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) in a General Meeting on Tuesday 15th January 2013 have agreed that they are going to hold the first Biennial Congress of the association on March 2nd 2013 in Freetown at the Late Harry Yansanneh Memorial Hall SLAJ Headquarters at 56 Campbell Street in Freetown.
This will be followed by an elective congress where new executive will be elected into office to run the association for the next two years.
According to the President of the association Fajah Barrie they are having a Biennial congress for the first time in the history of SWASAL as they want to be accountable to the members for their stewardship of the association for the past two years before going to election as election is one part of the Biennial congress.
He also stated that the reason why members have decided to have it in Freetown is because majority of the members are in Freetown and taking the Biennial to the provinces will cost more money as members from Freetown have to be transported to the provinces, lodged and fed.
The SWASAL President also revealed that during the Biennial congress only members from the provinces will be lodged while those in Freetown will be on their own.
He also stated that the responsibility to draw budget and to raise funding for the Biennial Congress is left with the executive and as a responsible executive they are going to work towards that.
The award night was other item on the agenda, for which members made vital contributions, highlighting some of the lapses during the last award nights.
The SWASAL President said that was the first award night and that was the fault of the executive as there was a committee that was responsible for that but he hoped that such lapses will not arise this time around.
He stated that if there is going to be an award to Journalists both in the print and electronic media there is going to be criteria that will be laid down by the award committee and they are going to work toward those criteria.
When it comes to the date of the Award Night the SWASAL President said that the time will be determined by the executive which is expected to be between April to May this year.
Other issues discussed included the monthly dues of members which must be paid in full if you are to vote or be voted for in the coming elective congress.
