The accused Ibrahim Kaloko, a businessman who is charged with one count of fraudulent conversion has had to spend time at the Pademba Road Prison because of a stiff bail condition.
The presiding Magistrate, Steven Conteh of court No.1 imposed a One Hundred and Fifty Million Leones (Le150, 000,000), two Surtees value Seventy Five Thousand Leones (Le75,000) each and one should be a house owner in Freetown on the accused.
According to the particulars of offence, the accused on diverse dates; between January 2006 to December 31st 2008 at 16 Magazine Cut Freetown fraudulently converted to his own use and benefits certain property that is to say the total sum of Twenty Thousand Dollars ($20,000) which is equivalent to Eighty Seven Million Leones entrusted to him by Bintu Mansaray (complainant).
Testifying in court, Bintu Mansaray said while in the United States of America she sent Seventeen Thousand Four Hundred Dollars ($17,400) to the accused to build a house for her family at Majay Town, Goderich adding that she gave Kaloko (accused) Twenty Thousand Dollars ($20,000) and Two Hundred and Eighty Three (283) Carats of gold.
Bintu said when she arrived in Freetown on December 31st 2012, she went to the supposed site where the construction was supposed to be taking place. She said to “my greatest surprise nothing has been done on the site.”
The witness testified that she went to the accused business place; 16 Magazine Cut Freetown and asked the accused for the $20,000 and the accused replied ‘di money don spoil’ meaning the money has been misused.
Bintu said she then asked the accused for the building materials at which the accused said he had borrowed somebody to build his house adding that she (witness) again asked for her gold and again the accused told her that he (accused) has borrowed somebody to wed.
Witness said the accused was not serious while he was responding to her because he (accused) was busy playing with his phone and told her that he (accused) will visit her in her place.
Witness said it took some days and the accused did not come to her place “I became angry and frustrated,” and made a report at the Criminal Investigation Department at Pademba Road.
