Stakeholders discuss draft National Policy for Teachers

Stakeholders and experts in Sierra Leone’s Educational sector last Friday converged at the Bintumani hotel in Freetown to deliberate on the draft National Policy on Teachers Training and Development and the accompanying Implementation Guidelines and Action Plan. The draft National Policy and the accompanying Action Plan among other things featured issues ranging from capacity building of teachers to improve quality delivery to the provision of a quality service condition for the profession. Delivering his welcome address chairman of the one day conference Prof. Kosonike Koso- Thomas described the conference as a landmark and memorable even for teachers and the teaching profession. Prof. Koso- Thomas said the draft Policy documents will go a long way in reversing the country’s image of under development and of an ailing educational system. He called on all stakeholders to come onboard in ensuring that the policy becomes a law that will change the battered image of our educational system. “This task is as urgent today as it was when this nation eagerly if not naively embraced the 6:3:3:4 system of education without the complementarities that would have ensured delivery of the quality products expected of the system,”Prof.Koso-Thomas said. The Deputy Minister of Education Algasimu Jah did the formal opening of the conference. He reaffirmed his Ministry’s continued support towards building the capacity of teachers in the country. He underscored the fact that there are many untrained and unqualified teachers across the country and this is posing serious problem to the quality of delivery. He considered the draft policy document as a positive step towards addressing this problem. Government Ministers, Parliamentarians, Heads of UN Agencies, Heads of International and Local Non- Governmental Organizations and Members of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union present at the one day conference made meaningful contributions as they discussed the clauses in the draft policy.
