In their effort to restore the past glory of the school, through the deliverance of quality education, the St. Joseph Secondary School Old Girls Alumni Association based in the United States of America (USA) and Canada yesterday, Monday 16th January, presented learning materials to the St Joseph Girls School as motivation for the improvement of its learning pursuit.
The learning materials which cost an estimated eighteen thousand United States Dollars (US$18,000) include 415 sets of chairs and desks and blackboards. Handing over the materials, Mrs. Mariama Sesay representing the Association said their action was motivated by the sad news that the school was not doing well by way of providing adequate education to its pupils and that what they were presenting was as a recommendation of an investigation team that was in the school some time back to assess the situation on the ground.
According to her, the report presented to them was appalling as it portrayed pupils sitting on cement blocks to take classes.
Mrs. Sesay disclosed that they organized a social evening under the theme, ‘Sponsor a Chair’, proceeds of which amounted to the US$18,000 raised in the Washington Area alone which were used to make the tables and chairs.
She further disclosed how members were asked to reach out to friends, family and co-workers to raise the amount. According to her it was by March last year that they were able to raise the amount needed. “Our objective was to change all the derelict tables and chairs as well as the blackboards in all the classrooms.
Mrs. Sesay asserted that the association’s accomplishment was spearheaded by the current executives in the USA led by Mary Kuyateh as President and Aziza Loubi-Sesay as Vice President.
She expressed hope that with this donation the pupils would be motivated to work harder and do their best to elevate the standard and glory of the school.
Principal of the school, Mrs. Hilda Lamboi thanked the Association and assured that the school will be equipped with the furniture as expected. She revealed that the school has also received similar presentations from similar past pupils’ association in the United Kingdom.
Mrs. Lamboi noted that with the presentations from the USA and UK associations the school is now set for a very clear future in terms of academic pursuit.
Head Girl, Junior Secondary School (JSS), Haja Isatu Bah stated the presentation proves the association’s love for the school and that they are proud of the school and what it has done for them.
