One of the best secondary schools in Sierra Leone, the Saint Edwards Secondary School, yesterday celebrated its 91st foundation day and flag- raising ceremony in contributing towards education in the country.
This celebration was held in the school campus as ex-pupils who are in the Old Edwardians Association and those intending to join the association, notably Hon. Chernor Bah- deputy Speaker of Parliament, Haja Kallah Kamara- the first female Commissioner of the National Revenue Authority, James Patrick Kamara-former Principal of the School, and Madam Edna Jones among others, the FBC Old Edwardian Association and present pupils graced the ceremony.
Guest Speaker, James Patrick Kamara, commonly known as ‘T-zoe’ former principal of the school, disclosed that a lot has been achieved by the school through the collaboration of the Old Edwardians, Association in the areas of discipline, infrastructure and academic excellence, but that there is lot more to be done.
He maintained that since the formation of the school in 1922, the school has registered a lot of achievements and successes through the sacrifices and commitments of both the Missionary Priests and Sierra Leoneans, as those were the good days of the school when discipline, dedication, perseverance and commitment to work, as these are the memory, which must be sustained and honoured in order to propel them to higher heights.
According to him, their predecessors never received success on a golden plate, but through hard work and commitment as they encounter a lot of difficulties, just as the students but with determination, they never gave up; as their success was due to the fact that they believed that education was and is still the key to success in life
“In light of the above, it is not surprising to us that our school has produced very eminent Edwardians in all works of life. For instance, the school has produced two out of the six constitutionally elected Heads of States of this country, namely, Sir Albert Margai and Dr. Ahmad Tejan-Kabba, while some others serve as Lawyers, Doctors and Bankers. Currently the following Edwardians are serving in the following capacities; Hon. Haja Umu Hawa Tejan-Jalloh (first female Chief Justice in Sierra Leone), Mr. Francis Munu-Inspector General of Police, Haja Kallah Kamara- NRA Commissioner, Mr. Sam Bangura Jr. Director General NASSIT, Hon. S.B.B. Dumbuya- Majority leader in Parliament, Hon Chernor Bah-Deputy speaker of Parliament, Madam Edna Jones-Retired educationist and French specialist among others,” he said.
He states that in the not-too distance past, the school was noted for its remarkable performance not only in academia but in other extra-curricula activities such as athletics, football, volleyball, cricket, lawn tennis and literacy and debating society (L&DS), adding that the school was the best in everything and a pace- setter for the schools in the country, explaining that the Old Edwardians, Association is ready to do more in transforming the image of the school to its past status, by building more classrooms to move to a single shift, awarding scholarships to deserving students, donate prizes to disciplined and hardworking students and providing incentives to the staff as a way of motivation
