The Mortuary in Makeni

Dr Adikali Kamara the Medical Doctor incharge at the Makeni Government Hospital has disclosed that in terms of mortuary facilities they have a place not a mortuary per say to keep the dead.
“When you say a mortuary you must expect – one a fridge and then there should be electricity supply then you call it a mortuary; we only have a store which accommodates only one body and the other ones we put them on the floor.  We keep the dead for a period of 24 hours at least” he said
Giving the turnout of patients he emphasized that people are very lazy to come to hospital. “If  look at the number of people attending antenatal clinics in the district and look at the population in Makeni city then you look at numbers of deliveries you will see that  only 30% of them come for delivery (most deliver) at home and then come with complications like bleeding before delivery and bleeding after delivery.
Calling on Government to intervene he said “we need health staff, professionals, technical people, doctors and trained nurses, we need drugs and other medical supplies, need disinfectants, and we need health education for the people to come to the hospital for treatment. We need something to face lift the hospital and for maintenance nobody provides money but now work is being going on at the maternity ward with funding from UNFPA”
He disclosed that since he took over “the hospital was completely vandalized with the exception of infrastructures, beds, tables, mattress nothing was in the hospital and they were using a wooden bed for pregnant women to deliver, no drugs. I was the first to enter as a national doctor in the hospital and all the nurses where out stationed.”He explained that he tried to rehabilitate the theatre and the maternity ward because it was closed down completely, tried to bring back the nurses, “there was no generator I brought back the generator for electricity. Presently he said the government is constructing another hospital about a mile from the present one which will be having over 200 beds.
