The new speaker of Parliament, Justice Nathaniel Abel Stronge became a year old in office yesterday in his new capacity.
Before his new appointment he was an Appeals court judge after serving for several years on the bench judiciously. Same date last year, the new speaker was nominated by Edward Turay, the majority leader of the House and straight away after his approval the House went in to business. Though new inParliamentary procedures, the speaker is beginning to grasp the affairs of Parliament more so as he is a lawyer. But his first year was definitely not rosy for some MPs from the opposition who criticized his handling of Parliamentary debates and not giving them the opportunity to contribute in debates. The minority whip of the SLPP, Hon Komba Koedoyoma told Awoko that the first session of Parliament was not exciting to him as he anticipated and that debates were restricted by the speaker. It was the speaker himself who reminded Parliament yesterday that he had served in that capacity for exactly a year. MPs stood up and applauded him. Unfortunately though, the speaker does not speak to the press and despite several efforts to interview him, he continues to turn down the request. Even at his celebration when Awoko made the attempt to interview him, his secretary said not to waste time as he will not do it.A year on now for the speaker to realize that he is no more in the enclosed courts but now a public person with the third highest authority in the land.
