Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Kenneth Masinga, the South African cricket expert hired by Sierra Leone, has outlined his mission to enhance the capabilities of local coaches through practical assessments. He emphasized his goal to assist 30 coaches in Sierra Leone before November 2023. In the International Cricket Council (ICC) Level 1 certification process, theory comprises 80% of the evaluation, with the remaining 20% dedicated to practical assessments.
Sierra Leone’s CEO of Cricket, Sheku Alim Cawray, emphasized the need for a certified ICC tutor for grading, which is essential for obtaining the ICC Level 1 certificate. Cawray highlighted that Sierra Leone’s participation in this course represents a significant step in the development of cricket coaching in the nation.
According to Francis Trevor Samura, Chairman of Cricket Sierra Leone’s Board, the ultimate objective is to increase the number of umpires and coaches. He outlined ambitious plans to train 500 Level 1 coaches and 500 Level 1 umpires by December 2024. Samura also stressed the importance of players, past and present, having fundamental knowledge of umpiring and coaching, which would prove beneficial in their roles as athletes. Additionally, Sierra Leone aims to target physical education teachers nationwide to equip them with these skills, which can then be passed on to students in both fields. BT/16/9/2023
