Thousands of Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) supporters came out and assembled at the Holy Trinity Secondary School field along Blama road in Kenema city on Saturday 14th June 2008 to receive the former party leader the former Vice President Mr. Solomon Berewa alias SOLO-B.
The supporters were dressed in their party colours, with some displaying the portrait of their party candidates who contested under the July 5th Local council elections.
Solo B. and Chief Brima Kargbo drove in the same vehicle waving to their party supporters as there motorcade drove through along Blama road, Hangha road, Koroma street, Sumaila street and then to the Kenema town field where the supporters were addressed by various speakers including Solo B.
Over 50 vehicles took part in the street parade and SLPP Honourables graced the occasion along with other party stakeholders who were in the city to formerly witness the formal launching of the SLPP campaign for the local council elections.
Addressing thousands of supporters the former party leader and Vice President Mr. Solomon Berewa thanked all for their massive turn out and for their massive vote for him and the party in the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections in the country. He appealed to his audience to continue to show that Kenema is the SLPP strong hold by coming out in their thousands to vote for SLPP candidates, so that those who deprived them of their vote will be ashamed of them and it will show that they lied on them.
He said since the Presidential and Parliamentary elections have come and gone yet still the National Electoral Commission (NEC) cannot show the polling stations that had excess votes.
He appealed to his supporters not to vote for any Independent candidates as the SLPP has no place for Independent candidates saying that in SLPP nobody has special right all are equal. “This is not the time for SLPP to be divided but to unite more than ever before, put all grievances at your back for the sake of the party and work and do everything together when it comes to party affairs.” He revealed that there is no division or faction in the SLPP as people have been claiming of a Berewa faction and a Kabba’s faction – “we don’t have such in the party” he said.
“When it comes to party affairs our interest is for the party to go ahead.” He appealed to his supporters to immediately close all small groups that exist within the party saying that such groups will undermine the activities of the others, and we will never win any election in this country if we did not close them. “I will never join any other party and I will always remain as SLPP and remain as a member of the National Executive Council because I have been a leader before” he said. Explaining why he accepted the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections results, he said it is because SLPP is not a fighting party but stands for peace and he knows how he suffered to achieve the peace the nation is now enjoying. Therefore he said he will not be a party to destroying the peace that he has achieved. The former Vice President said when he passes away he will always be remembered if the party remains united. He called on all not to make any mistake in allowing any other party to take the Mayor seat and the councilors in the district.
Formerly declaring the campaign open the party chairman U.N.S.Jah thanked the National and Regional executives for upholding the party and called on all to continue working as a unified force. He called on all to vote in the SLPP candidates and not vote for Independent candidates.
