The Sierra Leone Volleyball Association (SLVA) has on Saturday 17th April 2021 elected a new executive headed by Ahmed Khanou as president, who went unopposed during the association’s national congress held at the Presidential Lounge at the National Stadium in Freetown.
The position of Secretary General went to Alex Bonopha, who was also unopposed; Mohamed G. Koroma is Assistant Secretary – he defeated Suleiman Charles by 26 votes to 4. Kadiatu Conteh and Madam Sallu are gender reps.
According to the newly appointed president, he has appointed former volley ballers in the USA and Australia as Volleyball Ambassadors there respectively, while former President Christopher E. F. John was made Honorary President.
Before the election, the constitution was adopted, and the Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee, Joseph Nyande in his statement said that the association has been doing a very good job especially in beach volleyball where the male team was able to qualify to the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
He said they have gotten a very good elective congress, whose footsteps other associations should follow.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Sports (MOS) representative Steven Kelfala said their present challenge relates to most associations refusing to organise their elective congress, but that the association, under good leadership, has organised a successful elective congress the other associations should follow.
According to the information, the new executive will run the association for the next five years before another elective congress will be held.
Meanwhile, Assistant Secretary Mohamed G. Koroma has registered his “profound gratitude and appreciation to all delegates, veterans and the rest of the volleyball family for your support and confidence you have bestowed on us to lead this fine game of ours”.
He said the congress was indeed a mere manifestation of how united the volleyball family is, “and we as the new executive body will not and can never betray that trust, with God being our guide”.
He added: “Today marks the new energies and new dawn in the game that put a smile on our faces. I believe with individual and collective efforts we will make it to the Promised Land, where we all want to reach, and with you we shall surely reach there together.”
