The Hon. Member of parliament for the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) in constituency nine in Kenema city Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma has officially commissioned the newly constructed bridge at Kpayama section 3 in Kenema.
The bridge links Kpayama Largo town to the rest of the city.
Chairing the Ceremony Sahr Brima a superintendent at the Bo-Kenema Power Services (BKPS) described the occasion as historic in the lives of the people of Largo town at Kpayama and beyond, saying that all those who have constructed houses behind the swamp have been in hell for the past years in transporting their materials to their various sites and even foods stuff to their homes.
The chairman said they have been in isolation but thanked God their prayers have been answered through the young Honourable by providing them the bridge that is going to be used by them and generations yet unborn.
The bridge has been the felt need of the community but they have knocked at several quarters in the past to get assistance but to no avail. They thanked the Honourable who recently paid visit to their community after the election and sensed the need of the community people and decided to undertake the venture.
Now Largo town in Kpayama three is now part of Kenema city.
In her contribution the women’s leader of Kpayama three in Largo town Jeneh Sheriff explained that in the past some people have destroyed their properties in the swamp when motor bikes attempt to use the single board that they walk over to cross. She thanked the Honourable for coming to their aid and appealed to some other meaningful Sierra Leoneans to join the Honourable in the development of their area.
She said their youths in their area are different from other youths and they are always ready to embark on development drive in their community but lack the necessary working tools.
Madam Sheriff said the community now needs a community health center and a market.
In his keynote address the Honourable Member of Parliament in Constituency nine Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma thanked everyone present at the ceremony saying that unity is a driving force behind any development.
He said he did not believe in promising people but action, that is why he did not promise anybody during his election campaign. He stated that he knew the plight and need of his people that he stays with, and he decided to undertake the bridge construction at Largo town because it is necessary.
He explained that he too witnessed a scene where a woman came from the market and was thrown into the swamp along with the Honda rider and admitted that too has had to suffer at the scene.
He stated that he had to abandon his vehicle behind the swamp and walk hundreds of meters to meet his people at Largo town adding that now all that is over.
He said he would ever remain grateful to the SLPP. He said grumbling and crying will not bring people to power but hard work.
Honourable Nyuma disclosed that a group of the women at Largo town are currently engaged in swamp cultivation while the other group at Ngumbu section in his constituency are also engaged in groundnut cultivation.
Even the military are not left out in their agricultural work all with the aim of fighting the food crisis. He encouraged all to engage in agriculture, which he said pays greatly.
For any community to develop it first needs good roads he said.
Talking about his first action he said he donated huge quantity of hospital materials to the government hospital in Kenema because health is wealth. He thanked the bridge contractor Mr. Ayo Jones who has vowed to provide his knowledge free of cost for any SLPP member who wants to construct a bridge in his constituency.
My dream is to help develop the people of Kenema city and its environs. He called on every one to be law abiding and encouraged them to always work hard.
The S.L.P.P. District Executive chairman Mr. Prince Quee earlier in his contribution said the SLPP stands for development, unity and peace and it always stand for achieving its aim. He called on every one to work hard to maintain the people saying that when the country is good everybody enjoys but when it is bad everybody suffers no matter what political party you belong to. Mr. Quee said development is a process and when resources are available well-meaning people under take it. Meaningful contribution came from the Regional Chairman of SLPP Mr. M.A.Sandi and the Ag.
