The Chairman of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) John Oponjo Benjamin has blasted the Standard Times Newspaper stating that it is practicing reckless Journalism that has the tendency to create chaos and anarchy in the country.
He made these remarks while addressing a press conference held at the party headquarters yesterday to react to a lead front page story of the Standard Times Newspaper captioned “Preparation on the way SLPP: Task Force demands Diamba, Motorbikes, Cutlasses and daggers for the next election”. The Newspaper also published a letter signed by an unknown commander addressed to the National Executive Members of the SLPP.
In a strongly worded statement John Benjamin urged the Government to take appropriate action to investigate the veracity of the published article and accompanying letter, stating that a formal complain complaint will also be made to the Independent Media Commission for necessary actions.
John Benjamin said the SLPP would like to disassociate itself from the published letter and its contents adding that the party believes this is mischief aimed at detracting public attention from the abysmal failure of the APC to address pressing matters of governance, corruption, youth employment, poor service delivery and poverty.
He also said that the party wants to state that it firmly believes that the letter was written by the APC or its cronies to create a public impression that the SLPP like the APC is a violent party. He noted that the authors of this and similar letters and pronouncements can best be described as enemies of the land whose priority is to sow discord and manufacture justification for a diabolic plan by the ruling APC to oppress the opposition.
The Chairman of the SLPP Party reminded the public that the last SLPP administration ended the 11- year rebel war and brought peace to this country. He assured all that the SLPP will do nothing to undermine the peace and stability of the country.
