The constitutional committee of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has presented draft amendments to the party constitution to its National Executive Committee(NEC) over the weekend at the Bo meeting.
According to the party’s Secretary General, Jacob Jusu Saffa the amendments to the party constitution was done out of the realization that the root causes of some of the party’s problems emanated from its constitution.
The draft constitution will be looked in to by NEC, and be forwarded to the various regional party heads and shall come in to force and effect in accordance with the provisions of the Political Parties Acts, National Constitution or such other law.
One serious problem some party members encountered was the appointment of a running mate. The draft constitution makes provision for 23 members with a dual role to be performed by the party National Chairman as leader also.
The draft constitution states that the National Chairman of the party shall also be the leader who shall be the political and administrative head of the party. He/she shall chair National Party conferences, National Executive Council and other meetings of national character.
Also he shall advise the Presidential Candidate on strategic political issues, uphold and defend the constitution of the party, promote the policies and programmes and to represent the party in high level dialogue with government or non governmental organizations.
