Descendants from around Kenema district currently residing in the United States of America (USA) who have Kenema at heart have sent a delegation to Kenema on an assessment tour to identify areas where they could contribute to the development of the district.
The hard working men and women from Kenema District who now live in the United States have formed an organization called the Sierra Leone Kenema District Development Mission (SLKDDM) based in the United States under whose agency this group is working. They say they would be funding several projects in Kenema city in a bid to help foster development in their place of origin.
In their assessment of the government hospital in Kenema they have identified lapses and areas of concern that they want to come in and give a helping hand. In the series of projects that is to be undertaken they have agreed to improve on the toilet facilities in the hospital, empty the septic tanks, paint certain sections of the hospital, and clean the Heroes square in the city center.
In the bid to kick start the project the organization in consultation with the Mayor of the Kenema City Council Chief Brima Kargbo have already donated $1,400 to kick start the project and hope to be funding the projects in phases. This is not the first time the organization is helping the township of Kenema city.
Last year the same organization helped in building the Heroes square by the Choithram Super market along Hangha road where the statues of those who have worked hard to help improve Kenema city, the district and the nation as a whole now stand.
Briefing the Mayor Chief Brima Kargbo, the Mayor thanked them very much and assured them of his commitment and support at all times, the Mayor also appealed for supply of medical equipment to the government hospital.
He further expressed thanks and appreciation to the delegation for their unbridled patriotism and also assured the organization of his commitment to take good care of the Heroes square and to keep it in good order at all times. He assured them that Kenema city will be kept clean and beautiful at all times.
Head of the delegation Mr. Foday Sesay the Vice President of the organization made the donation and pledged that the organization will do more if the council makes good use of what ever is donated to them.
The Vice President also appealed to the people of Kenema to give a helping hand to the council as development is not a one man business. Other members of the delegation included Mr. Francis J.B. Samba and Pastor David Coomber.
Many people I spoke on the streets of Kenema city welcomed and appreciated the contribution SLKDDM is making not only in Kenema city and the district but the entire country.
