Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), backed by funding from FIFA, marked a significant moment on Saturday, December 9, 2023, by inaugurating the first edition of the National Youth Championship for U-12 and U-14 boys at the Koidu Town Field in Kono District.
During the event, Harold Nat-Johnson, SLFA Vice President – 1, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the pivotal role of a well-structured U-12 and U-14 league system in bolstering the performance of national teams. He underscored that the grandeur and significance of the opening ceremony would reverberate as a “milestone in the country’s football history.”
Among the dignitaries present were the Chairman of the Council of Paramount Chiefs, PC Emmanuel Foyoh, Deputy Mayor of the Koidu City Council His Lordship Shieku Kamara, Chairman of the Kono District Football Association Abu Bakarr Mansaray, and members of the Kono Old Footballers Association.
The launching event witnessed two exhilarating matches: Shaw United narrowly edged out Golden Soccer FC with a 2-1 victory in the U12 category, while Cosmos FC secured a convincing 2-0 win against Soccer Lions FC in the U14 category.
The championship’s preliminary matches will take place at the district level across Sierra Leone, leading to the national finals where qualified teams will contend for the championship trophy.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished personalities including SLFA Vice President – 1 Harold Nat-Johnson, Vice President – 2 Ali Badara Tarawallie, Eastern Regional FA Chairman Prince Saquee, Northeastern Regional FA Chairman Brima Jalloh, Northern-western Regional FA Chairman Abdul Osman Turay, Executive Official Mohamed Jalloh, and the Acting General Secretary Mohamed Benson Bawoh.
