The Sierra Leone China Friendship Society yesterday organized a symposium at the China House to join the Ambassador and people of China to celebrate the 6oth anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The Chairman of the occasion Alfred Bobson Sesay said as the sixth chairman of the friendship society, he was thrilled and happy for the development of China over the years.
He said the friendship society started in 1971 and has been the pillar for the bilateral ties between the two governments. He said he visited China in 1992 for the very first time and that was the period when they were able to get funds for the construction of China House which took six months to build. He also praised the then NPRC government for the support they gave in making the project a reality. He encouraged Sierra Leoneans to join the Society as it has been very beneficial to the country.
In his keynote speech, Ambassador Qiu Shaofang said he was very happy to attend the symposium in celebration of the 60th anniversary of his country and thanked the members of the Sierra Leone China Friendship Society for such a gesture, whilst also hoping that the relationship would grow from strength to strength.
The Ambassador said since the foundation of China in 1949, the implementation of the reform and opening policy 30 years ago, has captured the whole world’s attention with great achievements in socio-economic development.
“China’s overall national strength has greatly increased and we have made tremendous progress in the economy, science, technology, education, culture, health and sports; the life of our people has improved greatly”.
Ambassador Qiu said the two countries have enjoyed a long history of friendly bilateral relationships, and this year marks the 38th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He stressed the point that the two countries are ‘bosom friends’ even though they are 10,000 miles apart.
He said China will continue to help Sierra Leone in every development process and the Ministerial conference in Egypt this November, Sierra Leone still stands to benefit.
The Ambassador congratulated Bobson Sesay for his significant contributions between the two countries to the point that he is one of five Africans to be honored in China by the Chinese government.
Bobson Sesay will receive the China-Africa Friendship Award along with the former Congolese Prime Minister, Egyptian Foreign Minister, Rtd. President Kenneth Kaunda and Ahmed Salim Salim. The Deputy Minister of Local Government, Ibrahim Kalokoh commended the Chinese for their immense development and their contribution to the development of Sierra Leone He averred that the 38 years of friendship between the two countries has yielded lots of infrastructural, educational, agricultural and financial gains for Sierra Leone and hope that this friendship will grow from strength to strength. The guest speaker of the occasion Dr Ramadan Dumbuya gave a lecture of China since the Dynasty period to 1949 when Chairman Mao Zedong declared the People’s Republic of China. He commended China for their strides and hope they will continue to grow in all areas and will be able to build a harmonious world. The congratulatory message was read by Josephus Williams who is the Organizing Secretary of the Friendship Society.
