Sierra Leone Canadian Children’s Aid Society (SLCCAS) has been official launched by the Chief Executive Officer and President Mr Mohamed Son Samura at their 17 Percival street office in Freetown.
Before launching the organization the Chief Executive Officer said SLCCAS is a group of social workers child and youth care workers from Sierra Leone and Canada who have come together and decided to embark on this great journey of humanity, solidarity and diversity. He explained that they chose to establish this aid society for children and families because they strongly believe that today’s society, community and people are at a crossroads when it comes to children’s care and we all have so much at stake for the children born and those yet to be born.
According to Mohamed Son Samura the society was established in response to the many challenges families and the government face in ensuring that children do not become vulnerable to abuse and maltreatment either by commission or omission from adults who hitherto must live up to the moral and legal responsibility of ensuring that children are given opportunity to thrive and realize their full potentials without fear of harm and abuse.
Mr Samura maintained that they strongly believe that the greatest gifts to be given to the children of this great country will be the gifts of freedom, support, trust, equality, and respect, including but not limited to promoting effective and efficient parenting skills.
He said this is against the backdrop that when children become attached to their primary care-givers they do not feel better about themselves and their abilities, but that would create a bonding that would make them assert their self-esteem so that they could enter school very excited and ready to learn. He said they are more likely to achieve their fullest in the communities they live in. It is therefore a great opportunity for SLCCAS to come together with the shared vision of common values, goals and issues that concern our children and the community in which they live.
The CEO also mentioned that their life experience has provided them with a balanced perspective of the challenges they face as a community and as a nation. It has been made clear that the solutions to these challenges will require hard work, determination, resilience, compassion, love, caring, and patience.
According to the Chief Executive Officer SLCCAS is a humanitarian, charitable and developmental organization founded in Toronto by Sierra Leonean and Canadians interested to promote awareness and therapeutic interventions to children who experience abuse, neglect trauma and poverty among others, mainly in the West Africa State of Sierra Leone.
Other speakers like Khadijah Bangura the Social Secretary, Executive Secretary Ehila Noah made important statements during the launching.
